Rovaniemi (Santa Claus Village)
The home of Santa Claus and the most visited town in Lapland.
Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland and the official home of Santa Claus, sits directly on the Arctic Circle and is the most visited destination in the region. It serves as the main gateway to Lapland with excellent transport connections, including an international airport and rail links from Helsinki.
Rovaniemi is particularly popular during winter, when the landscape is covered in deep snow and the Arctic atmosphere comes to life. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of classic Lapland experiences such as reindeer sleigh rides, husky safaris and snowmobile excursions. The city also offers a variety of restaurants, hotels and wellness centres with traditional Finnish saunas and spas.
Just outside the city centre is Santa Claus Village, where travellers can cross the Arctic Circle and meet Santa Claus year-round. Nearby SantaPark is another well-known attraction, especially during the Christmas season. In winter, the dark Arctic skies also provide good opportunities to see the Northern Lights.
In recent years, Rovaniemi has experienced rapid growth in tourism, particularly during the festive Christmas season, when travellers from around the world arrive to experience Lapland’s winter magic. While this creates a lively atmosphere, it can also make the town very busy during the peak weeks in December. Travellers visiting Lapland outside the festive period often enjoy a more relaxed experience, and those travelling during the busiest season may prefer to stay in smaller destinations where the landscapes are quieter, the experiences more authentic, and the wilderness more accessible.
While Rovaniemi is the most accessible destination in Lapland, travellers seeking quieter Arctic landscapes often continue further north or east. Several airports across Finnish Lapland provide convenient access to different regions:
- Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) – gateway to Rovaniemi, Ranua, Luosto and Pyhä-Luosto National Park
- Kittilä Airport (KTT) – serves Levi, Äkäslompolo, Muonio and Kilpisjärvi
- Ivalo Airport (IVL) – gateway to Saariselkä and the Inari region in the far north
- Kuusamo Airport (KAO) – provides access to Ruka and places like Posio, known for forests, lakes and outdoor adventures
These destinations offer deeper wilderness experiences, excellent Northern Lights viewing and a more tranquil Arctic atmosphere away from the busiest centres.
