Why travel to Iceland with 50 Degrees North?

Iceland is a landscape still being made. Volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls and geothermal springs sit on top of active geology, and the result is a country that feels genuinely different from anywhere else in Europe, and one that rewards travellers who go beyond the busiest sights.

Most Iceland trips orbit the Golden Circle and the south coast, and for good reason. But the island's character shows up as much in the quieter places: the remote highlands, the fishing villages, the roads where the traffic thins and the scenery does the talking. Our team designs Iceland in-house, building routes that pair the famous stops with those slower stretches rather than rushing between highlights.

Whether you join one of our group tours, travel independently, or explore on a tailor-made luxury itinerary, the aim is the same: to show you the island at a pace that lets it register.

What makes a 50 Degrees North Iceland journey different?

Beyond the Golden Circle
The Golden Circle and black sand beaches earn their place on most itineraries, and ours include them. But we build in the highlands, the quieter coast and the corners most trips skip, so the island reveals its range rather than its greatest hits.

A geothermal country
Hot springs, geysers and volcanic ground create a geothermal environment found nowhere else in Europe. It shapes everything from the bathing culture to the way the land itself looks and behaves.

Wildlife on land and water
Whale watching, seabird colonies and the famous Icelandic horse make for memorable encounters, and our journeys build in the time and the places to find them.

Built for self-drive, supported throughout
Iceland is one of the best countries anywhere for independent self-drive travel, and many of our journeys are designed exactly that way, with routes and accommodation arranged in advance. Behind every trip sits 24-hour emergency support, so the freedom of the open road never means being on your own if something changes.

When is the best time to visit Iceland?

Iceland is a genuinely different trip depending on when you come. Summer brings the midnight sun and green, open landscapes, with the highland roads at their most accessible. Winter is darker and quieter, the season of the northern lights and frozen waterfalls, though some routes close. Spring and autumn sit in between, with fewer visitors, open roads and the land at its most changeable.

Travel with us to experience Iceland's natural beauty and its distinctive Nordic culture.
