Tromsø

Tromsø is the main town in northern Norway and gateway to the Aurora Borealis.

Tromsø is the largest city in northern Norway and the main gateway to the Arctic, sitting well above the Arctic Circle at nearly 70 degrees north. It is known for the northern lights in winter, the midnight sun in summer, and a lively, walkable centre that is far more cosmopolitan than its latitude suggests. It suits travellers who want genuine Arctic access, whale watching, dog sledding, aurora hunting, without giving up good food and a real city to come back to each night.

Our destination guide further down the page answers the most common questions about visiting Tromsø.

When is the best time to see the northern lights in Tromsø?

The aurora season in Tromsø runs from roughly late September to late March, when the nights are dark enough. Tromsø's position under the auroral oval makes it one of the most reliable places in the world to see the lights, though sightings are never guaranteed and depend on clear skies as much as solar activity. Our guide to the best time for northern lights in Norway covers how the season works and how to plan around it.

How many days do you need in Tromsø?

Three nights is a sensible minimum in winter: enough to give yourself more than one chance at the aurora, since any single night can be clouded out, plus a day for dog sledding or whale watching. Add more if you want to combine Tromsø with the surrounding Lyngen Alps or a trip further north. In summer, two or three nights is enough to take in the midnight sun and the city itself.

When is the best time to visit Tromsø?

It depends entirely on what you have come for, because Tromsø is two different destinations across the year. Winter, from roughly November to March, is the season of the northern lights, snow and Arctic activities. Summer, from late May to mid-July, brings the midnight sun and hiking under a sun that never sets. The shoulder months of September and October offer autumn colour with the aurora season just beginning.

What is there to do around Tromsø?

Beyond the city, Tromsø is a base for genuine Arctic experiences: whale watching in the fjords in winter, dog sledding, and aurora hunting away from the city lights. The Lyngen Alps, within reach to the east, are among the most dramatic mountains in northern Norway. Tromsø also works as a starting point for journeys further into the Arctic, along the coast or towards the Finnish border.
